Page Navigation: How To Give Your Readers An Easy Way To Find Information Around Your Blog (Part 2 of Better Blog Pages)
In part one of this series Setting Up A Business about building a better blog page we discussed why to have an email address available on each page of your blog. You may be excited now to jump right into discussing about your blog content, buy hey, hold your horses a little bit more… There’s another element on your blog that you may not have given that much attention –-your page navigation.
If you’re not tech savvy the idea of navigating any where is making you yawn. Stop it right now this blog and my expertise is women and other entrepreneurs who are setting up a business! In the 5 part series we’ll be talking in terms you can understand. You may chose to have a web designer help you with your blog but it’s smart business to know the basics so you pay only for what you need and want as you .
Imagine your blog page as a map. Many of readers may be interested in your latest blog post. Your goal though is to have the prospect linger a bit and take a look around at the other content you’ve created. This hopefully will lead them to make a buying decision about your product. You don’t want them to get lost in trying to find the kind of information they are looking for and leave in exasperation, do you?
When setting up a business blog, this idea of page navigation simply means leading them where you want them to go. If you’re a health practice for instance and they are a patient in your office you would not want them wondering the halls looking for the exam room they belong in. You have someone guide them right? Your blog is the same way.
Your page navigation should feel like a walk in the park!
Here’s how you can help them find their way around:
- Top Bar Navigation – Identify the 5 or 10 most important pages on your blog. Your contact page should be one of them. Make your blog idiot-proof by spelling them out clearly on your navigation bar when setting up a business site. For instance you can set up the most common things visitors to your site would be looking for and then place ‘child’ topics under that heading. This is all done in WordPress under the Menu tab within Appearance. It really is simple.You have to have the page already created. Then in the menu tab you can select it and move it to the nav bar. If it is to be a child of a main tab you place it under that heading. If you have an eCommerce store online you may want to have the main topics in at the top. Perhaps baby clothes, baby shoes, baby toys. Get the idea? Then under baby clothes the child topics are tops, bottoms, dresses . . .
- Interlinking Your Pages – It’s good to link to previous blog posts; but bloggers often neglect to link to other pages within the blog. If you have an About page, it would be great to link it at the end of every post. Or if you say ‘contact me’ on your post, make sure it is linked to your contact page. Here we’re back to day one where we talked about making sure your email is on every page. This is one page that should be ‘inter-linked’.
- Other Navigational Considerations – Navigation pages should be in places where people would normally look – your header, your footer or your sidebar. Explore and experiment your interface based on habits of your readers and the look and feel of your site design. Look at what other in your industry are doing, then look at other industries. You want to stand out not look like your competition.So Find something smart looking, fun, and affordable that no one in your market is doing and do that.Your product is consulting. All the consultants in your market niche use soft colors and girly themes. Stand out by making your Navigation brighter colors that attract both men and women. When you are setting up a business using a blog can help you not only be visual but add value to your marketplace. This is a good thing. The more your name is out there the more your buyers will associate you with being the leader in your field.
